We get this question almost every week: "I've never played — where do I even start?" Below is the framework we use with brand-new golfers at Vail Golf Academy. Five lessons, each with a clear job.
Lesson 1 — Grip, posture & setup
Almost every problem in a golf swing starts before the club moves. Your first lesson focuses entirely on how you hold the club, how you stand, and how you align to the target. It's not glamorous, but it's the foundation everything else is built on.
Lesson 2 — The half swing
We don't start with full swings. You'll spend lesson two making short, controlled swings to feel the proper sequence: rotation, weight transfer, and contact. By the end, you'll be making solid contact more often than not.
Lesson 3 — The full swing
Now we extend the motion. You'll learn how to wind up properly, deliver the club to the ball, and follow through balanced. Expect to hit some great shots — and some not-so-great ones. That's normal.
Lesson 4 — Short game basics
Putting, chipping, and pitching account for over half the shots in a typical round. This lesson introduces the touch shots that save strokes and make golf fun.
Lesson 5 — On-course fundamentals
The final lesson takes you onto the course (or simulated course conditions) and covers etiquette, course management, scoring, and how to stay relaxed when there's a ball in front of you and people waiting behind.
How quickly will you improve?
Most beginners can play a relaxed 9 holes within 5–8 lessons — assuming they practice between sessions. The key word is practice. One lesson without follow-up rarely sticks; a lesson plus 2–3 short range sessions almost always does.
Common beginner questions
Do I need clubs first?
No. We have loaners. Wait until lesson 3 or 4 before buying so you know what feels right.
What should I wear?
Anything athletic and comfortable. Closed-toe shoes (sneakers are fine to start). In the Tucson heat: hat, sunglasses, water.
Am I too old to start?
No. We've taught beginners in their 70s who are now playing weekly rounds with friends. Golf is one of the few sports you can genuinely start at any age.
